Happy Autumn!

It feels like lifetimes since we’ve checked in with all of you. Summer always seems to get away from us; especially when your life revolves around harvesting, hiking, and collaborating! There is a very clear hive energy during the summertime that quickly shifts into the internal as we move into autumn. Fall is a great time for gathering all of your threads and reclaiming them for winter when we weave, ground, and prepare. We at the Cottonwood Medicine Collective are doing just that!

We are currently focused on connecting with the community around possible partnerships & collaborations, building our apothecary as well as looking to fill our events calendar for next year

We are excited to announce that we have made a connection with the Albuquerque Center for Peace and Justice, by becoming a Peace and Justice Organization Linking Arms (PAJOLA) member! This collaboration holds great opportunities for both of our organizations, giving us a potential spot for hosting our Sliding Scale Clinic, as well as lending our herbal skills to the P&J events and activities. We look forward to working with them and updating you all on our progress there.

We've been harvesting and making medicine like crazy! All to build our wonderful clinic apothecary! We will have tinctures, vinegars, teas, honeys and more! We would love to connect with local farms, apothecaries, herbalists and individuals. If you have any extra plants in your garden or pantry that you'd like to donate to the Collective, please get in contact with us. We will come help you harvest!

Ginger!


Ginger | Zingiber officinale | Zingiberaceae Family

This past week, the Collective spent some time making ginger remedies for our community apothecary. I was so excited to be playing with this plant again, as I hadn't thought about it all summer. I think that a lot of people don't consider plants like ginger, garlic & onion, as herbal medicine; because they are so commonly used in food.

After Balloon Fiesta, I started catching a cold. I went for my echinacea, yerba mansa & zinc... all the while these ginger remedies were infusing on my counter, quietly giving me a clue. Once I got a day to rest, I made myself ginger tea, and was at once uplifted, cleared & energized. I had forgotten how simple and marvelous ginger is for the common cold. It is appropriate, that before I came to write this article, I took a 2oz shot of fresh ginger juice(with lemon & cayenne)!


Ginger can be used for multiple ailments and body systems. It is a warming and grounding plant that is great for all constitutions. According to Ayurveda, ginger is one of the few heating plants that can be used for all doshas! It is grounding for airy Vata, stimulating for stagnant Kapha, and strengthening for fiery Pitta, as long as it's used in moderation. Ayurveda uses ginger as a way to move toxicity out of the body. If you find that you are sluggish, depressed or emotionally overwhelmed; ginger can work to push out the root of those issues, making way for deeper healing.

For colds and flus; ginger helps to stimulate the immune system, clear congestion and bring warming, energizing flow to the body. It is commonly used to aid digestion and help with gas pains, as it kindles our digestive fires. Ginger improves overall circulation, and can aid a person with rheumatoid arthritis, muscle aches and cold joints. Many women have also used ginger tea to ease menstrual cramps, and you can easily make a freshly shredded ginger poultice, to apply to sore muscles and joints externally for pain relief and circulation (make sure you avoid mucous membranes and sensitive skin).

Ginger is accessible, growable at home and not threatened. It is important to buy your ginger organically, as it can be overly sprayed in conventional cultivation. Most of us have at least dried ginger in our pantry! It can be used alone in remedies, or added to formulas, soups and other dishes; lending it's warming attributes and medicinal qualities. It is such a wonderful and versatile plant. I hope that you decide to use some of it this fall and into winter!

Ginger Cordial

Infuse chopped, fresh or dry ginger in alcohol of choice. 1:4ish, herb:alcohol ratio, for 3-6 weeks and strain liquid. At this point, for about every 2 cups alcohol, add 1/4 cup honey. Adjust to taste. Once bottled, cordials will last, and often improve with age


Immunity tea with Ginger!

Equal parts dried:

·      Ginger

·      Elderberries

·     Astragalus


Tea for Toxicity

1 part dried      Ginger

1 part dried      Lemongrass

1/4 part dried   Rosemary

Ginger Honey

Fill a jar with fresh (or dried) ginger, cover with honey, let sit for 2-6 weeks, strain out plant material (or don’t), and enjoy in teas/on toast/in a desert recipe/drizzled on yogurt or alone!

Rose | Rosa sp. | Rosaceae Family    May 18th, 2017

We’re gearing up for summer here in Albuquerque and when I think of summer plant allies, rose is always at the top of the list. With both cooling and astringing actions, rose can help us to keep calm, soothed, and joyful in the midst of a fiery summer. In fact, rose can help us out in many “over-heated” and “irritating” situations.

 

Such a helpful plant friend, roses can be used for tonifying the cardiovascular system, soothing the skin, aiding in fertility and uncomfortable menses, comforting grief, uplifting the spirit, and quelling fear. You don’t necessarily need to consume this plant to benefit from its medicine, just stick your nose in a flower and inhale deeply!

 

I love both the scent and taste of rose and recommend incorporating it into your day-to-day lifestyle where appropriate. Included in this article are my go-to favorites that include rose.


There are tons more rose recipes readily available on the internet or at your local library . If you find yourself succumbing to the heat this summer season, try out a rose recipe, spritz yourself with rosewater, or spend some time hanging out with a rose bush. You just might find yourself reflecting rose’s cool, calm nature before long.

Rosehip Face Serum

For a 1 oz bottle:

·      1 part Rosehip Seed Oil (good for anti-aging and anti-scar properties)

·      2 parts Other Oils (I like grapeseed, jojoba, argan, or sweet almond oils for the face)

·      5-7 drops Essential Oil of choice (I like rose, chamomile, and geranium EOs for the face)

·      Apply 7-10 drops to the face morning and night for well-hydrated skin


Susan’s Breath of Fresh Air Tea Blend

Equal parts dried:

·      Rose

·      Tulsi

·      Lemonbalm


Rose Vinegar for sunburns and as a facial toner (click link for recipe)


Rose Honey

Fill a jar with fresh (or dried) rose petals, cover with honey, let sit for 2-6 weeks, strain out plant material (or don’t), and enjoy in teas/on toast/in a desert recipe/drizzled on yogurt…


Rose Elixir

Fill a 1 quart glass jar with rose petals (dry or fresh), cover petals with 1/3 quart honey, top off jar with brandy. Let sit 2-6 weeks, strain out plant material, bottle and enjoy
